On October 4th., 2013, the Florida Board of Medicine reprimanded and fined a Miami psychiatrist $15,000, four years after becoming a symbol of over-prescribing medications. Also, the agreement called for him to be evaluated for mental and behavioral fitness, for his medical practice to be assessed for risks, and for him to reimburse the state more than $22,000 in costs.
The Florida Board of Medicine accepted the agreement between the doctor and the Department of Health without comment.
The Florida Department of Health brought charges against the psychiatrist in 2013 for publicized actions in the Miami Herald in 2009. The Agency for Health Care Administration ended Medicaid privileges for the psychiatrist earlier in 2009.
The complaint against the psychiatrist specifically involved the care of three children from 1999 through 2009. The psychiatrist treated these children on Medicaid with multiple anti-psychotic drugs costing taxpayers hundreds of dollars apiece for a month’s supply. In a two-year period, he was determined to have written nearly 100,000 similar prescriptions, which would have been more than 150 a day, and made him by far the largest Medicaid prescriber in the state.
